Indigenous Family Space Opens at BCHS

The Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) has officially opened Onkwehon:we Raotihwa:tsire Kanakti:yo (translated in the Mohawk language) and Anishnaabe Gudwehaangiswin aachkinigan (translated in the Anishnaabe language) as original peoples’ family room (Indigenous Family Space) at the Brantford General Hospital.

This is an important step forward in creating a welcoming, inclusive healthcare experience for Indigenous people at BCHS.

Michelle Bomberry, Manager, Indigenous Programming for BCHS (pictured center) recently provided a tour of the new space to representatives from Healthcare & Municipal Employee’s Credit Union (HMECU). Thank you to HMECU who have generously donated to the Emergency Department (ED) Renovation Project and the Indigenous Family Space.

With the incredible support of community, the BCHS Foundation has raised over $8 million to date to cover the “local share” cost of construction, as well as purchase essential medical equipment for the new ED space.
