Computed Tomography (CT) scanning is a highly specialized x-ray imaging procedure used to acquire detailed images of every area in the body, providing information no other imaging device can obtain. Modern CT Scanners are an incredibly valuable tool that have revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of trauma, cancer, stroke, infection and many other conditions.

The Diagnostic Imaging Department at the Brant Community Healthcare System is one of the busiest in the region, operating 24/7 and performing 50,000 CT scans every year. Excessive demand increased wear and tear on the BCHS’s first CT unit, resulting in increased downtime. Included in the Emergency Department redevelopment project was the purchase of a critically needed new CT Scanner – one of the most frequently used pieces of equipment at the BCHS.

Did You Know?

  • The CT at BCHS performs 50,000 scans per year
  • Since the installation of the BCHS’s first CT in 2010, volume/demand has increased by 200%
  • 45% of the volume on the CT results from Emergency Department patient visits
  • Two biopsies per day are performed using the CT to support the Brant Community Cancer Clinic

In July 2023 the BCHS offered improved access with the addition of a new CT scanner. The BCHS Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to our community donors whose contributions made the $2 million purchase possible. “Each success of the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation is truly due to the generosity of our community, our donors and our volunteers. We are so appreciative of the donor investment that helps us support new spaces, new technology and medical equipment that directly impacts patient care,” said Lee Ferrao, Chair of the BCHS Foundation Board of Directors.

Medical imaging is a constantly changing environment. Technologies are always advancing, which is very expensive to maintain. In order to keep providing our patients with the highest quality imaging, our equipment and software continually need to be updated. Donor dollars help make these very large purchases happen.

Our CT scanner is one of the busiest in the region, imaging more patients per hour than most other hospitals. Our DI department at the BCHS runs 24/7. At any given time, we will have anywhere from 2 to 20 technologists and up to 7 radiologists working. This is why a second CT is so important.
