In December 2021 the Foundation team spoke with Dr. Aaron Wynn, an Emergency Department (ED) physician at the Brantford General Hospital since 2017, about the critical role the ED plays in our community.
How is the Emergency Department at Brantford General Hospital (BGH) providing excellent care?
Our ED ensures that the community receives the best possible care when they need it most. The ED physician group works alongside nurses and physicians assistants to provide clinical assessment, medical procedures, interpretation of lab and imaging tests, and lifesaving therapies. Whether patients are in need of minor assessment and flow through our “See and Treat”, or, need more acute and complex assessment in our resuscitation area, the ED is the entry point to the medical system.
Tell us something you don’t think the community knows about the ED at BGH?
The ED is constantly focused on quality of care — including improvement of patient flow, coordination with community resources, clinician education and training, enhancement of our approach to our most critical patients (e.g. heart attack and stroke), or expanded access to radiology and specialty services. I am proud to be a part of the ED team at the Brantford General Hospital because of its talented and dedicated staff. I am so grateful to be surrounded by such supportive and resilient colleagues, all of whom share the common goal of providing excellent patient care.
How will the ED redevelopment make a difference for our community?
The ED redevelopment will have a tremendous impact on patient experience. Newly designed acute care and mental health care areas will mean that patients can be assessed in the location that is most appropriate for their care. A redesigned layout will also mean physicians can flow between patients more effectively and have more time to spend with each patient. And, improved flow also means improved wait times for those needing to access the ED at the BGH.
