Meet Dr. Lucas Spicer, a full-time emergency medicine physician at Brant Community Healthcare System. Not only was he born and raised in Brantford, his four children were delivered at Brantford General Hospital. “I am proud to be a part of BCHS,” said Dr. Spicer, “I can honestly say that I have never worked with a stronger group of professionals.”
The Emergency Department (ED) at BGH is open 24/7 and staffed by more than 270 specially trained physicians who treat individuals with a variety of medical complications, urgent mental health circumstances and addiction crises.
“I think people in general don’t realize the frequency in which we see people in severe physical and emotional distress,” Dr. Spicer said. “This doesn’t happen once or twice a week, but consistently throughout our shifts. On any given day, we will see heart attacks, strokes, motor vehicle accidents, overdoses, pediatric emergencies and more.”
One such emergency was the case of Karen Loomis, who arrived last December by ambulance to the ED and into the care of Dr. Spicer. He worked to resuscitate her for over an hour. Karen and her family will be forever grateful for the care she received from Dr. Spicer and the ED staff. “I believe his persistence in sticking with me over and above what anyone might expect was the difference between life and death,” said Karen.
The Emergency Department team is dedicated to providing excellent care each day to our community.
“It’s a place where you will be deeply cared for – a place where your health and the health of your loved ones will be placed in capable and caring hands,” said Dr. Spicer.
He is looking forward to the ED redevelopment, noting the project will greatly improve infrastructure and transform the ED into a top-tier facility, matching the amazing staff who work tirelessly to provide optimal care.
Thank you, Dr. Spicer, for the life-saving care you and the entire ED team provide to our communities!
