Meet Dr. Anirudh (Rudy) Goel, a hospitalist who has been with the Brant Community Healthcare System since 2017. Today, he leads a department that cares for all medical in-patients including palliative care and geriatrics, with the exception of patients admitted to intensive care. We asked Dr. Goel to explain what a hospitalist is and their role at BCHS.
“Most family physicians do not provide care for their patients once they are admitted to a hospital,” Dr. Goel said. “Hospitalist physicians provide care for patients with a variety of severe medical issues such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure and stroke.” At Brantford General Hospital (BGH) there are currently 35 hospitalists, 17 of them full-time, caring for 220 patients or more each day.
“As hospitalists, we really strive to provide safe, high quality, patient-centered care at BGH. We do this throughout the hospital and have close, collaborative relationships with our colleagues in the Emergency Department. The ED is the first point of contact for many of our sickest and most complex patients,” explained Dr. Goel. “This is where we see a reflection of the diversity in our community. It is important that we can provide the proper care that matches these needs.”
New infrastructure that will be part of the $7 million dollar ED redevelopment project is critical for continuing to respond to the needs of our rapidly growing communities. “Improved infrastructure, including additional patient care space, more private rooms and dedicated isolation areas will really give us the opportunity to provide care that is aligned with our values of compassion, accountability, respect and equity. Our top priority at BCHS is to always put patients and families first, and the extensive ED redevelopment will help us achieve that goal,” said Dr. Goel.
Brant Community Healthcare System is fortunate to have Dr. Goel on our exceptional team. He was recently nominated for and received a ‘Thumbs Up’ award in recognition of his leadership and work at BCHS. His nominator shared that Dr. Goel is a great leader and team member who “always takes the time to listen to his patients and take their concerns into account when completing a plan of care.” Thank you Dr. Goel for the care that you and the hospitalist team provide to our community!
