In December 2021 the Foundation team spoke with Courtney Martin, a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) about the critical supports Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) has provided to our community during the pandemic
What role do you play at the Brant Community Healthcare System?
I am a full time RPN with my home base being the Palliative Care/Medically Complex unit, but I am currently working in the Covid Assessment Centre. At the Covid Assessment Centre, we administer Covid tests and provide our community with reassurance and compassion during moments of stress and anxiety. A pediatric clinic has recently been added to the Assessment Centre, with physicians on staff 7 days a week to support children in the community.
What are the benefits of having this service in our community?
Covid testing is essential at this time. Having our own Assessment Centre available to our community has had a great impact. Our community does not have to travel to other testing sites in different communities since our site is available 7 days a week by appointment from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
How does the Palliative Care/Medically Complex unit at BCHS provide excellent care?
Having palliative care beds available for end of life patients provides a space for people whose care needs are above what is able to be provided at home. It allows family and the patient to have a space in hospital that is private and has a “home like” atmosphere, but also has 24/7 care provided by our highly trained and specialized staff. Our goal is to give the best care possible to our patients and their families throughout their end of life journey. I try my best to deliver excellence in care for my patients and their loved ones, and show them the compassion, and empathy that is so important in this field of nursing.
